From Ireland to England and so much more.

It's international day! I love this day because we get to change up the day a little and learn about where some of our staff come from.  We went all the way to England today to learn about rugby and cheese wheel races. Sarah dressed very Irish and came to London with us to talk about how their Rugby is better than England  rugby! Chris and Eb who teach Activities, movement, and dance, and health and fitness were our teachers for today's visit to England. The video about cheese wheel races was so funny. We even learned an England chant so if we ever do see a rugby match we know what to yell. International day was so much fun, I'm glad that we get to learn about where some of our favorite counsellors are from.

Bingo!

Graham and Scott joined in with groups 7 and 8 and took part in a Pioneering lesson. Colleen put together an awesome activity, we listened to sounds and looked at pictures of animals to try and win at bingo pioneering style! We learned what a sparrow sounds like and looked at pictures of exotic animals such as peacocks prairie dogs.  It was such a fun activity on a nice and sunny day. Thanks Colleen!

Aye Aye Captain

We do a lot of activities here at camp, but my favorite is boating. What I like about boating is going out on the pontoon boat. Sometimes we go out to try and find some turtles on the lake. Other times we go out to try a catch some fish. Along with the power boat we also take out the row boats. I like going out on the row boats because sometimes they let me row! I like to be the fastest rower to get back to shore before the activity ends.

Graham's Back!!!

I've been away from camp for 3 weeks now and I am so excited to be back for my last session this summer!  The apprentice team is 5 men strong and our coaches Jesse and Emily are back for two more weeks of awesomeness! We just finished a great breakfast of bagels with cream cheese and oatmeal with blueberries and fresh cantaloupe too! My first stop after breakfast was to my favorite place at camp... The swimming pool! While I was there, Jillian a lifeguard, and Rohan an apprentice doing the pool assistant job found a frog in the filter! Don't worry we set it free. That's all for now.

Big Accomplishment at Horses

I did horses on Monday and I was a little nervous at first, but then I really liked it. I was scared to get on and ride, but I got over my fear and ended up  having a lot of fun. The staff at horses were really nice, and they let me ride two horses named Buddy and Freckles. I’m so glad I did it! I  was  very  proud  of  myself  that  I  went  on  a  horse.
Horses are not the only animals that I take care of at camp. I also get to walk with Harvey or give him treats when he does a trick!

My favorite activity at camp is Arts on Monday .I like to do this activity because I can be creative and then take whatever I make home with me after camp ends. Meeting new friends is also one of my favorite things at camp.

I also love my cabin with all of my friends! We really enjoy helping each other and hanging out during our free time. The girls and I get along very well and it’s been fun to get to know everyone better these past four weeks. During quality time, sometimes we all just sit and talk to each other while we get ready for bed- and these are some of the best parts of the day.

Next year I hope all of the apprentices and job coaches come back, because I’m going to miss them! I hope everyone has a good summer!

Chug-A-Lug by Emma

My two weeks as an apprentice is over.  I am going to miss all of the exciting things that I get to do at camp.  There is such a variety of jobs and activities to attend that I never get bored and I can’t wait to come back next year.  Being an apprentice is about being independent of going to our jobs on time. Also walking to programs all by ourselves. We get to use our cell phones to communicate with our job coaches.  My favorite part of being an apprentice is getting to work at camp horizons.  I love being an assistant to the program counselors and I love being able to walk around camp and do jobs that keep camp running.

Last night I won the chug-a-lug award.  I drink a lot of water all day during activities and jobs to stay hydrated.  My job coaches told our unit leader how awesome I have been doing and how I have been a great role model drinking water and I won the award.  Everyone was screaming my name in the dining hall and I got to chug an entire glass of water in front of the whole entire camp!
Emma

Will's Two Weeks At Camp

I love being apprentice because I like to do a bunch of different jobs. During the week I do shopping and other things such as dining hall clean up, helping move benches in the gym, and soda order and food prep. In food prep, we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner, which was my favorite job I’ve done so far!

I also had a great time at camp having fun and flirting with girls because I am a ladies man every time I return to camp every summer. I enjoyed having a night off with other apprentices like going to bowling. For our night in, we got to tie-dye t-shirts and have a big meal with wings, sandwiches, and even ice cream for dessert! These days off were really fun and some of the best parts of being at camp.

I also had a great time at the dance. They played some really great music and I got to dance around with my friends and Job Coaches. I am also happy to see Jack Walker again, who was my job coach from last year. He surprised us and came to visit camp, so I’m really happy I was here for when he came.

I’ve had a lot of fun these past two weeks at camp!

It’s been an AMAZING four weeks!

We are now winding down week 4 with only 2 more days of camp. It has been an amazing 4 weeks being in the apprentice program! My favorite job over all was working with Harvey. I was able to give him a bath, and even clip his nails.

My favorite programs were pioneering and language arts. My favorite activity in pioneering was learning the food chain. My favorite activity in language arts was when I got homework. I hope I can get another piece of homework before the session ends!

I am really happy about tonight for our night in and being a DJ for the talent show. I am also singing a solo doing ”No One Needs to Know” by Shania Twain. I also liked going bowling for our night out. My birthday was in week 3 and I got to have a birthday party at camp. I had a really great birthday with all of my friends at camp. I can’t wait until next summer when I come back!

Ben's Exciting Experience

I am an Apprentice at Camp Horizons and I really like all my jobs. For water delivery, I scoop out ice into the bucket and  put water into it. Then, I bring it to the activities that need water for the day. We also get to feed the donkies. We give them grain, hay, and fill up their water. I am also a Pool Assistant sometimes during the week. I skim the pool to make sure that there is no dirt or bugs in it for when campers come to swim. I am very responsible and always make sure my work gets done.

My favorite activity is Health and Fitness. We go on the the bikes and work out. This week I even won the Health and Fitness award!! One of my other favorite jobs is Off-the-Grid. We sand buckets and work on bird houses, which is a lot of fun. We also have night-in’s where we hang out  and eat dinner somewhere else than the dining hall. On our nights out, we get to go do something fun like bowling last week. Evening activities are fun, too. Last night was the dance, and everyone got dressed up and I danced around with my Job Coaches. It was really fun!

I can’t wait to come back next year!

Vicky's Experience At Camp

Hi, my name is Vicky!

I started Camp Horizons when I was 15. That was 2005 and then I started the Apprentice program in 2010. My favorite activity at Camp Horizons is horseback riding and swimming. I do a lot of jobs at Camp Horizons as an Apprentice, and one of my jobs is Pool Assistant, Off-the-Grid, and Coffee service. We do nights out and nights in where we go do things outside of camp that we do not normally get to do.

Last week we went bowling and it was really fun. I love doing the apprentice program. Today we are doing are night in we are staying at camp and making tie-dye!

I am working with Natalie, Ben, and Kunal and sometimes we work with Janine and Logan and Dustin. We eat breakfast and Lunch and  Dinner with Scott and Aileen and Justin and Emily and Emma and Rohan .I have Job Coaches, and their names are Emily and Lauren and Jesse and Andy. I love being an Apprentice because I  am good at it and I am responsible and independent. I have always been on time for my job and the programs, so I know I’m good at my job. I hope I can be in Apprentice next year in 2016!

Natalie's Camp Story

My name is Natalie and I have been coming to Camp Horizons since I was 12 years old and I am now 25, almost 26.

I started the Apprentice Program in 2011. It is a fun program where we do certain jobs like coffee service where we make the coffee and then deliver it to tables. We also help out with program activities. One of our jobs is pool assistant, where we check the filters in the pool. For coffee service we make the coffee and then we go around to each table and ask people if they want any.

My favorite activities at camp are pioneering, music and horses. My favorite evening activity was karaoke night when I sang "That don’t impress me much" by Shania Twain. When I am not at camp I go to a day program called Marc in Cromwell, Connecticut. I work at ShopRite in Manchester and East Hartford. I clean the glass doors and the aisles. I also work at a job site called Meals on Wheels delivering food to customers houses. I have a older brother named Jason and a younger brother named Geoff. Jason is 38 and Geoff is 22. I just turned 26 on 7/7/2015. My favorite TV shows are Lassie, Full House, and Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. My favorite singers are Selena Gomez, Shania Twain and Hilary Duff. I just got a new cat named Sox and she is black and white.

Bowling Night Out

Last week we went to the bowling alley to have a great time together for our night out. Kunal and I played bowling and danced to the music.I used my hearing aid to listen to the bowling sounds. I got a spare, and Kunal got one too. Logan even got a couple strikes! Everyone did a really great job, and we were all laughing the entire time! We also ate good food and soda at bowling, and this was a special treat that we usually don’t get at camp.

We had a really fun night out as apprentices, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll do for our night in coming up this week! It’s going to be the best week ever!

Scott's Story

We went bowling and in the first game my score was 116.

Now i only have five days of Summer Camp left before I leave this Saturday.

I videotaped this band that performed here yesterday for Second Sunday and it was Fiesta Del Norte and I had lots of video shots of it on my SD card along with the last campfire.

At the bowling alley in North Windham CT I had water, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, fries, and macaroni and cheese balls.

I had fun with everyone and can’t wait to have a day off from Summer Camp to meet with Colin Rice in town at the radio station in Willimantic Ct for a internship.

I’m also excited about meeting Jack Walker on July 15th, 16th, and 17th which are the three days of his visit since I miss seeing him here at horizons.

On Week 3 I made a Thank you note to give to Christian Robinson about how to make Microsoft Outlook work on my laptop since i always had problems with it at home in my hometown.

This was not only a experience but also a opportunity that I could only get at summer camp.

Dustin's crazy camp life

I love coming to camp because it is very fun and I get to see all of my friends and my fiancé. I love being silly with everyone.  Last night I went bowling for our night off and we met up with our old friend Des.  I beat everyone at bowling, I am the king of the pins!

I like to work with Steve because we get to do different things than other people at camp. We get to do wood work and doing maintenance around camp. I like fixing and building things and Steve is a great person to work with. I like working with Steve because I have known him for a long time and we always have fun working hard.

We have a new job this year feeding the donkies and it is awesome. We get to walk over to the EEC and leave camp for a little while and we feed the donkies and give water to the chickens. While we wait for the donkies to finish eating we get to sit with our friends and the job coaches and talk about stuff. We have lots of fun.

Second session with Rohan and Kunal

Kunal and I are best friend. I like Kunal because he is a funny and is a great guy. We go to camp horizons together every year and we are here for four weeks this summer! We like going to camp together because we are both pros at the apprentice program. We like helping people at camp and we also help each other.

Rohan and I love to play music together. We like to dance at the dances, we are both really good dancers and we have a lot of fun. We are like brothers and I wouldn't want to have camp any other way!

Hello From Horizons!

Hello, Morgan here!

So Sunday we kicked off our second session with some gorgeous weather, and an amazing intake day! Everyone is excited for the next two weeks, new faces, new friends, it's just going to be fantastic!  Our new group of Campers and Apprentices are here, and the Apprentices are already hard at work.

We had a great first session, as you can tell from the amazing blog posts that the Apprentices have done so far. We went down to the Pond for a night in, no mosquito's that night! The Apprentices dance and sang at the Talent show, everyone had a great time with that. Our day out was extremely fun, we went to Mystic Aquarium and explored all the different areas there, and even touched some Bull Nosed Rays ( they're very slimy). I hear amazing things  from the Job coaches about the Apprentices, and how they work very hard in their jobs.  Honestly with out them, Camp probably wouldn't run as smoothly.

We've had a blast these past three weeks, I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. These guys and gals are amazing, and they prove that every day!

Apprentice Coordinator

Arts And Bowling

One of my favorite activities at camp is arts. Last week we got to tie-dye apprentice shirts, and we taped designs on them so the color didn’t take up the whole shirt. We do a lot of different things in arts like drawing, painting, and sewing. It’s cool because we can take the crafts home and keep them after camp ends. I hope I can do more painting in either camp crafts or arts before I go home!

Tonight we get to go bowling for our Apprentice night out. This will be fun because we will get to leave camp for a few hours and do something we never get to do. Everyone is really excited to bowl and eat a special meal away from camp. I can’t wait!

Wacky Wednesday!!! By Aileen, Janine, and Justin.

Today is wacky Wednesday!!! It's one of our theme days where we get to dress up as wacky people.  We raided our cubbies and found the craziest outfit that we could find. At breakfast everyone had crazy hair styles, were wearing tie dye, had cat shirts, and some people even had paper towels coming out of their hats. Our whole group was so excited, even our counselors got wacky!

Last night's evening activity was a live concert in the gym.  The band was called the Hillbilly Graham Crackers and we had a lot of fun. We all danced together in one big circle. I had a great time listening to music and dancing with my friends!

Monday, July 6, 2015

I’ve been coming to camp for so long that I can’t remember when I started!  Yesterday was intake day where I got introduced to my group and cabin.  I am so excited to be back in cabin 5 with all my friends!  Last year I had almost all the same campers in my group, I can’t wait to hang out with them.  I have made friends at camp that are now my friends all year long.  We have been talking about camp ever since it ended last year and we can’t wait for another fun session.  Last year we went swimming and horseback riding together and I can’t wait to do those things again.  We have horseback riding today, I really like the horses, it’s going to be so much fun.  Juan has been working at horses for a long time and I saw him this morning, I am so happy that he is back this year.  He is a really fun horse instructor.  We have swimming after horses today, and I can’t wait to go swimming with all of them.  We will have free swim this afternoon, I plan on hanging out in the pool with my friends, Aileen, Vicky, Janine, Emily, Emma, and Natalie.  I am so excited for this session to begin!

Aileen's Day

We had our night off last week and it was a tons of fun! We got to go boating and had amazing food such as Chicken and Potatoes and Broccoli then for Dessert we got to make S’mores, which were Yummy!!

I love being an Apprentice because of the independence and all the different jobs I asked for on my resume. My all time favorite part about being at camp is riding horses and going boating and Arts and Crafts and swimming in  the pool. I have Coffee Service which is when you pour coffee into Cups and add milk and sometimes sugar, then ask groups if their campers if they want Coffee. Then I have Water Delivery, which is when you fill up water jugs and bring them to each activity and leave cups and a garbage bag with the water jug. The first activity is Drama which is my all time favorite activity because I love acting and singing and such. Then there is health and fitness is the coolest activity ever since you get to learn different things like how to eat healthy foods. Dining Hall/Soda prep is something that they came up with last year its so easy, you basically go around to each activity (Program) and ask each group if they have any soda money and they drop the ticket into the Treasure Box. Then we go back to the dining hall and get the soda and bring them to each table before lunch begins. Dining hall clean up is basically helping Voc sweep, taking out the trash.

I love Horses the best because I love riding horses and getting to say like “Whoa” and walk on” and the best part is getting on and off from the Horse  which is the easiest.  After Horses I have Swimming which is my all time favorite because I get to swim with all of my friends, and then right after swimming i have dinner setup and soda prep just like at lunch. Then there’s dinner cleanup, then the best part of the day is Evening Activity!!!!

I am Scott L.  I am a apprentice. I have many talents for Summer Camp which are Videographer, emcee of LIVE Bands on Second Sundays, Camper Talent Show Host, DJ of Club Horizons, and Movie Announcer.  What I like about Summer Camp is International Day since I like presenting my Powerpoint Presentation that's all about England. I have been a apprentice for five years from 2010 to 2014 and now this is my sixth year as a apprentice.  I have friends at Summer Camp. My favorite day is intake day because I take lots of video shots with my video camera, evening activities, and Second Sundays. Being an apprentice means not only working hard to get paid but for how much I can accomplish.  I like being an assistant in certain activities like Language Arts, Music, and Drama.

I like being an apprentice because it means a lot to me.

I like Horizons because there are lots of campers here and there are lots of evening activities to go to.

I have done Soda prep with Andy because I had to figure out which groups had the soda tickets for lunch.

I have become friends with Audray , Steve , Christian , Will , and Steve .

My favorite evening activities are dances, campfires, fireworks, and drive in movies.

I’m excited to continue working for the next two weeks before i’m done on July 18th which is on Week 4.

Mystic Aquarium

Yesterday I went to mystic aquarium with the apprentice team. It was fun because we saw lots of fish and underwater animals. We got to watch the sea lion show and walk around a lot. This was a fun day out for the apprentices and I was happy that we got the day off and did not have to do any jobs. Later we came back and were able to still watch the fireworks, and I got to relax and watch the show. I am having a great time here at camp!

The Kunal Experience

6/25

My first summer at camp was 3 years ago and this is my second year as an apprentice.  What makes CH so special is that I get to have jobs and have my own responsibility as an apprentice.  I love doing all of my jobs but i also like to have down time and time to just relax.  My favorite time to relax is in the pool with all of my job coaches and apprentice friends.  I love swimming.  I participated in drama and it was really fun.

One of my jobs is soda money- soda is a special treat for some campers and if I weren't there helping, no one would get their soda! I like giving the campers their soda. Everyone is always happy to see me when I am handing them a soda. I love being an apprentice because I also get to have nights out where we get to go fun places like mystic aquarium. We also got to go to the pond and have a barbecue with the whole apprentice team. I really like being an apprentice and hope to be able to do it for a long time.

A well deserved day off. By Justin

I’ve been working so hard for two whole weeks and we finally got our day off!  We went to the mystic aquarium and saw the seals and sea lions.  I have been to the aquarium before but this time I was with all my friends from the apprentice program and it was the best experience ever.  We saw different kinds of sharks, I liked them so much that I bought a shirt from the gift shop that have sharks all over it.  I will not forget this trip for a long time.  I also bought a necklace with a shark tooth on it!  Maybe someday I will work at the Aquarium with the sharks but for now I will be happy just working at the pool at camp.  I was so excited about this trip that I got inspired that I wrote a poem about a shark named Bolo.

I'm going to tell a story about a shark

Bolo the shark lived under the
water in the ocean.
All the other fish were afraid of him
and his big sharp teeth!
What the other fish didn’t know was that
Bolo was a vegetarian.
The only thing Bolo wanted was friends.
Every time he swam to the other fish
They would run away in fear of being eaten.
One day a big big sea lion swam over to Bolo
The sea lions name was Coco and he became friends
with Bolo.
Coco and Bolo bonded over their mutual love of
vegetables and wanted to let the fish know not to be scared
of their big sharp teeth.
One day Coco and Bolo brought the fish a peace
offering, telling them that they could protect them
as long as they all became friends.
From that day on Coco and Bolo became the protectors
of the Arctic and had lots and lots of friends!

Graham's Day Off

Today we had our day off and went as a group to the mystic aquarium.  I was very excited to have a day off, we have all been working so hard and it was nice to be with my friends and be able to relax.  This was my first trip to the aquarium and I had so much fun!  When we first got inside the aquarium we went straight over to the beluga whales, there were three huge white whales! They were beautiful.  We took lots of pictures with the whales.  I also really enjoyed the sea lion show.  The way the sea lions jumped out of the water and waved their flippers at us was awesome.  I really liked sitting at the show with my cabin mates and having fun with them.
Tonight is the fireworks show and I am very excited for it! We will all go as a group down to the pond and enjoy a fourth of July experience like no other.

It was nice having a day off and being able to go to the fireworks show tonight, but I can’t wait to get back to my favorite jobs.  The best part of my day at camp horizons is getting to doing my favorite jobs over and over again.  My favorite job is working as a pool assistant.  As a pool assistant I get to work with the lifeguards to keep the pool working the way it needs to work for all the campers to swim in it.  I mostly work on cleaning and checking all the filters.  I love this job because it is a big job at camp.  Everyone needs me to do my job right because if the filters don’t work then no one can swim in the pool.

My two weeks as an apprentice. By Julie

I like my Job Coachs Lauren, Jesse, Andy, and Emily.  They taught me different things this week like how to make a fence for a garden as well as hoe to tend to a garden.  We are responsible for watering a majority of the plants and flowers at camp horizons.  I like this responsibility because it is something that I learn here at camp but I can also do these jobs at home with my family.

I like working in the Trading post which is our own little shop at camp.  I like working there because it's nice to see how they price their items on the Computer.  I get to work behind the counter with staff and help campers buy their items.   I like being an apperentice because I can work by myself or with a few other apprentices without counselors around.  It makes me feel responsible and I get a sense of independence here that I don't always get at other places.

My days at camp are very exciting and full of different jobs and activities.  Yesterday I did yoga, played family feud, rode a bicycle, chase the chckens and feed the donkies.  I also created a memory book to take home. I also made a banner, and wrote a thank you letter to all the counselors.  I had fun in horses yesterday we did some riding and throwing horse shoes, and I also did Camp Crafts Assistant.   Tomorrow I will be doing mail sorting and also doing Arts and Crafts Assistant and meeting new friends like I do every day at camp.

Why be an apprentice? By Kate

I love camp horizons, and being an apprentice makes my experience even better.  The reason why I love being an apprentice is because this position gives me more independence than what I used to get as a camper.  The apprentice program lets me do what I do best which is helping people.  I get to be an assistant at programs and that means that I am the person that the program counselors depend on to give extra help to campers.  I love helping campers with things that they cannot do by themselves.  Being a camper was not for me, I enjoy my apprentice schedule way more because even though I love my job coaches, I enjoy being able to move from activity to activity without a counselor constantly with me.  Being an apprentice helps me meet new people.  Doing all of these different jobs with my coaches, fellow apprentices, and program counselors helps me be better prepared for my job when I get back home.
I also like to just hang out with my job coaches and friends.  I like sitting on the veranda before a meal or during free time with Andy and Jesse, some of our job coaches, as well as my friends in the apprentice program. I also love talking late into the night or waking up early with Emily and Lauren, our other job coaches, and going to do coffee service and talk about the day.
Be an apprentice because this job takes a lot of hard work but it is also very fun.
-Kate

My favorite parts of Camp Horizons. By: Chris

My favorite part of Camp Horizons is that Lindsey my music instructor is a good soprano. She taught us a new song to sing at the end of each lesson and I like the song a lot.  I liked it when we talked about the Beatles and described emotions with drum sounds. The outside of the drum is high pitches meaning things are fine where as the middle is low meaning something is dramatic. I’ve learned about how to harmonize hand bells in Music.  I like movies and music. My Dad, Grandfather, and some of their family were musicians.
For my apprentice jobs I have been delivering laundry and sorting mail. Those are my most favorite jobs.  I enjoyed participating and assisting in language arts because I learned how to use words. One of my first jobs is water delivery; I am still doing it and enjoying it.   I also like boating because I remember the front is the bow, the back is the stern, the right side is the Starboard, and the left side is the Port.  I like Camp Horizons because when I come here I learn a lot and also get to help others learn too.
-Chris
