I take my jobs seriously as an Apprentice. By Katie

The best thing about being an apprentice is helping in drama and language arts. When we do  scrapbook i work hard. the best part about  camp is  crafts and music.

Sometimes i like to be the Arts assistant and infirmary assistant.

When i was the drama assistant i talk about the about talent show and helped the campers get ready for their performance this week. When I was the language arts assistant I helped the campers write letters home. I helped the campers think about the favorite things that they have done at camp so their counselors can help them put it into writing. Another job that I really enjoy is scrapbooking. We take pictures and walk around  to find things we like about camp. We will be using the pictures that we take and the blogs we post to create a scrapbook for all of the apprentices to have!

Tomorrow I will be the arts assistant, I am excited  for this job because I am happy to help. Later In the week I will be the infirmary assistant helping the nurses, I have done this job before and I can't wait to do it again.

I really like being an apprentice because i work hard and because I also get to have a lot of fun with my friends.

Janine’s Life Story of Being An Apprentice. By Janine

I like being an apprentice because we get to have freedom and are able to walk on our own to jobs and activities. We also get to help out the program staff at camp . We do different jobs like drama assistant and activities, movement, and dance assistant. We have new jobs this year that we did not get to do last year like feeding the donkeys.  I like helping other people like the campers in the activities that I get to assist at. I also love having fun at camp with my friends.

The weeks are going by fast because I am having so much fun! I love being an apprentice and keeping busy at camp because it make me feel good helping others and giving others  a hand around camp if they need something.

As an apprentice I help out at AMD  ( activities movement and dance ),  holding the expression sign  and putting out the yoga mat and help others campers to do the activity. Helping others make me feel good and happy.

This year we have a new job feeding the donkeys we have to feed them food and the chickens we have to chase them and put them back in  their home. I haven’t done this job yet but I am looking forward to doing it! I am also excited about helping in DRAMA because I never help in Drama before.

We have fun on our night off last week at the pond . We had chicken and roasted potatoes for dinner and salad and we went on the boat and we had a campfire and made S'mores .   

We have a night off tomorrow and I am looking forward to it because we get to leave camp and go to the MYSTIC AQUARIUM and I can’t wait for that. It's going to be exciting!

Yesterday I went swimming and I love to swim at the pool and plus I got to help out at the pool during my pool assistant job. When I do this job I get to help out at the pool to open the trimmer and to take out the dirt and put the trimmer back on. I never get to do jobs like these anywhere else! The other job I did yesterday I like was scrap book because I love taking pictures and taking pictures of things and people.

I am looking forward for the next two weeks to see  my other friends that are coming to camp!

What I really enjoy the most about being an Apprentice is knowing that I help others in need around and throughout Camp Horizons each and every day. I enjoyed being the Drama Assistant yesterday because I really felt that made me feel good inside knowing that I can help others in need as well as help change lives. Also I enjoy making new friends as well too because meeting new faces as well as making new friends go hand in hand.  So far I have met a lot of new faces this session and even made some new friends as well. I enjoy doing jobs just as much as I enjoy doing activities. One of my new friends that I met so far is Issy a new counselor at Camp Horizons and I like her as a person and as a friend.

Independence, Teamwork, & Activities

The Apprentice Program is all about independence, working as a team and  assisting activities.

We are independent when we assist PC’s and walk to programs by ourselves and go to the Media center.   We also use cell phones  in professional  settings. Having different jobs everyday  helps us to make new friends all the time , we like working as a team to do our jobs  and going to different activities everyday . We work as a team when we do Coffee Service, Dining Hall and Off the Grid.  All of these things allow us to help new and old friends every single day.

We also like being out with friends on nights off, we also make food on our nights off, and visiting new places and coming back later to camp. Nights off are the best  because we get to leave camp and go to new places that you wouldn’t  normally go. We are all are VERY excited about tomorrow night’s night off at the pond where we will get to go fishing and eat good food and we also will be able to make s’mores!!!!

Camp is only a few days away!

As the 2015 camp season is approaching ever so quickly, the job coaches are  super excited to meet the Horizon's Apprentice team! We have all been preparing everything that needs to be done in order to have the best summer yet, and we can't wait to start a camp season that is full of hard work, determination, and most importantly- fun!

Although this will be the first time I'll be lucky enough to work with the Apprentices, I was a counselor at camp last summer and had some of the best times of my life! I love to listen to music, play sports, and write, but my favorite activity at camp is definitely sitting around the campfire at night. Needless to say,  there are no activities that I don't enjoy doing at camp!

As a new job coach this year, I am extremely excited to be able to work with some of the most devoted campers Horizons is lucky enough to welcome. I've heard nothing but great things about the Apprentice program and all of the awesome people involved, so Sunday can't come soon enough!!
